A one-vehicle accident on Friday morning left a 20-year-old woman in a coma at University of Louisville Hospital.

Emily L. Holmes, of Herndon, was travelling west on Peonia Road at around 7:20 a.m. when, according to an accident report filed by Sheriff Rick Clemons, her vehicle dropped off of the outside shoulder of the roadway.

The report said that the 2001 Ford Taurus SE that Holmes was driving appeared to have overcorrected, causing the vehicle to slide sideways before crossing the oncoming lane of traffic and leaving the roadway on the left-hand side.

The Taurus struck a tree on the passenger side before coming to a rest.

Holmes was freed from the vehicle by non-mechanical means and treated at the scene by Grayson County EMS for incapacitating head injuries before being transferred to Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center. She was then taken by Air-Evac helicopter to U of L Hospital.

Clemons said that Holmes was in “grave condition” as of the most recent update.
