A man was arrested in the early morning hours of December 19 for breaking into and stealing items from a parked tractor trailer with its sleeping driver inside.
The driver of the big rig had arrived early to the Dollar Store on Elizabethtown Road in Big Clifty, and was sleeping in the cab of the truck as he waited to make a delivery to the store, according to Kentucky State Police Master Trooper Norman Chaffins.
At just before 6:30 a.m., the driver was awakened by a noise and saw a white S-10 pickup truck turn out of the parking lot, going east on US Highway 62, toward Hardin County.
Realizing that his truck had been broken into, the driver contacted authorities, and the Grayson County Sheriff’s Department was alerted, according to Sheriff Rick Clemons. Officers quickly realized that the nearest person to the scene was a State Police trooper, and the incident was turned over to KSP.
Approximately five minutes after receiving the call, Trooper Brad Riley observed the vehicle at the intersection of US 62 and Old Leitchfield Road, in Hardin County.
Riley stopped the vehicle and arrested the 36-year old driver, Tracey J. Hart, for careless driving, failure to wear a seatbelt, driving under the influence, driving with no insurance, carrying a concealed deadly weapon (brass knuckles), and receiving stolen property worth under $10,000.
Hart was lodged in the Hardin County Detention Center following his arrest.
Upon investigating the scene of the theft, it was determined that Hart had cut the seal on the trailer and stolen approximately $1,000 in merchandise. All of the merchandise was returned to the Dollar General Store following the arrest.
Trooper Riley was assisted by Trooper S. Rafferty, Trooper D. Kelly and GCSD Deputy Adam Cottrell.
The investigation is ongoing, according to Chaffins.
