Last Saturday night at Breckinridge County, the varsity girls took charge late in the third quarter, then held off the Lady Tigers the rest of the way to earn a hard-fought win 54-46.
In the JV contest, the Lady Cougars scored the first 18 points of the game, then had to hold off the surging Lady Tigers in the second half to take a 38-28 decision.
VARSITY GAME
After the Lady Tigers scored first at the 6:40 mark, the Lady Cougars responded with 11 unanswered points, including a pair of three-pointers from senior Cassidy Swift to lead 11-2 with 4:36 left in the first quarter. Grayson County led by five points, 13-8 heading into the second period.
Breck led by as many as four points in the second quarter, but the Lady Cougars came back to tie things at 20-20 on a Jodi Decker lay-in at the 2:59 mark. The lead then changed hands four straight possessions in the last 2:02 of the first half, which ended with the Lady Tigers holding a one-point advantage, 26-25.
Breck scored the first four points of the third quarter to take their largest lead of the night, 30-25 at the 6:40 mark.
The Lady Tigers still led by four points, 35-31 with 3:33 remaining in the period when the Lady Cougars went on a run to seize control of the game. Grayson County closed out the period with a 10-0 run, seven of which came from junior Kaylan Shull, and took a 41-35 lead into the final period of play.
Shull opened the scoring with 1-of-2 at the foul line at 6:13 to make it 11 straight points, then Maddie Stewart made it 13 straight with a lay-in at 5:57 and Grayson County led by nine points, 44-35. The Lady Tigers were never closer than six points the rest of the way.
The Lady Tigers put two players into double figures. Mary Hinton had 15 points, while Jenna Thornhill added 12.
Shull led all scorers in the game with 22 points, including two three-pointers, and also led the team on the boards with six rebounds. Stewart finished with 18 points and added four rebounds, two assists and four steals.
Swift finished with eight points and pulled down three rebounds. Decker finished with three points, Sloane Embry had two, and Sarah Pierce had one to round out the scoring. Embry also led the team with six steals.
JV GAME
It looked as though this game was going to be a blowout after the Lady Cougars held Breck scoreless in the first period and six different Lady Cougars scored to lead 13-0 heading into the second period.
It looked even more like a blowout after the Lady Cougars opened up the second quarter with a three-pointer from Katie Hayes and a 15-footer from Jessica Johnson to make it 18-0 with 5:12 left.
But the Lady Tigers began getting things together at that point and Grayson County had empty trip after empty trip. The Lady Tigers outscored the Lady Cougars 10-1 in the last five minutes and trailed by just nine points, 19-10 at the half.
When the Lady Cougars scored the first five points of the third quarter, they pushed the lead back up to 14 points, 24-10 at the 4:55 mark. They led by 13, 26-13 heading into the fourth quarter.
A three-pointer by Morgan Marple cut the Lady Cougar lead to 10 points, 37-27 with 2:02 left to play, then a Marple free throw cut it to nine, 37-28 with 1:30 left, but they would not get closer.
Marple led the Lady Tigers with 12 points. Hayes led Grayson County with 10 points, including two shots from behind the arc. Grace White scored seven points and led the Lady Cougars on the boards with five rebounds. She also had three steals in the game.
Sloane Embry continued her sound guard play with six points, three assists and three steals. Jodi Decker had five points, three assists and three steals. Johnson and Cortney Tomes both had four points and Tomes added four rebounds. Bethany Harting had two points to complete the scoring.
