The Grayson County Middle School cheerleaders won the overall Grand Champions’ prize at the Cupid Classic competition at Warren East High School on Saturday, February 2.

In addition to their Grand Championship, the team won the first place prize in the Middle School Large Division, and Alayna Johnston became overall champion in the jump contest.

Saturday’s victory marks the first state championship earned by Grayson County, and the cheerleaders will follow it up by competing in the Universal Cheerleaders Association National Championship in Orlando, Florida.

The team will depart for the National Competition on Thursday, February 7. The competition will take place on February 9-10 and will be held in the HP Field House and Jostens Center at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Theater at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Coach Tina Poindexter said, “We did great Saturday. That win helped us prepare for the National Competition and really boosted the team’s confidence and spirit. Disney World, here we come!”

Prior to their leaving, the team will have a send-off at 6:30 PM on Thursday in the GCMS gym with pastors from the community joining them in a group prayer. Then their bus will be led through town by a police escort.

The National Competition can be viewed via live stream by searching “National HS Cheer Championship” under “competitions” on uca.com.
