A double injury accident on Kentucky Highway 54 on Wednesday evening sent two women to University Hospital in Louisville, one of whom was seven and a half months pregnant, according to Kentucky State Police Trooper Norman Chaffins.
KSP Trooper Brad Riley responded to the accident on the 9500 block of KY 54 at approximately 6:25 p.m. to investigate.
The investigation, according to Chaffins, revealed that 37-year-old Tonya Maxey, of Falls of Rough, was operating a 1994 Chevrolet van, heading eastbound, when the vehicle ran off of the right shoulder of the roadway and struck a concrete culvert.
The reason for the accident is as yet unknown, Chaffins said.
After striking the culvert, the van rotated clockwise and then overturned several times before coming to a final rest off of the shoulder of the roadway on it’s side.
Both Maxey and her passenger, 19-year-old Amber Manor, who was expecting a child in a month and a half, were seriously injured in the crash.
Neither occupant was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the incident.
Manor was airlifted to University Hospital where the last update as of press time revealed that she was currently in the labor and delivery department.
Maxey was transported by Grayson County EMS to Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center, and was later transported to University Hospital as well, for treatment of serious injuries.
Trooper Riley was assisted in working the accident by the Grayson County Sheriff’s Department, Falls of Rough Volunteer Fire Department, and Grayson County EMS.
