To the Editor:

I wish to comment on the recent accident on Highway 259 north of Leitchfield. According to the news reports the driver to the red SUV ran over a 9-year-old girl. He failed to render aid and didn’t even stop at the scene of the accident.

I am a frequent traveler on Highway 259 and a good friend of the family of the injured girl. The problem with Highway 259 is the road is to narrow, too crooked and too hilly to support a 55 mph speed limit in such a congested area.

Often when I travel between Holly and 401 in Breckinridge County. SUVs and pickup trucks pass me as though I was standing still. I am positive that some of these speeders are going 75 to 80 mph. This must stop before one of these speeders kills someone.

Highway 259 should either be widened or a six-foot shoulder constructed on both lanes to accommodate all the bike riders and horses and buggies. Until then, the speed limit should be reduced to 45 mph between Holly and 401 in Breckinridge County. This is too congested an area for a 55 mph speed limit.

Sincerely,

Bill Bartos

Caneyville
