More than three months after it was damaged, the roof on Caneyville’s fire station will be repaired.

During the Monday, June 11, city commission meeting, City Clerk Brenda Brown announced the city had received $8,947 from its insurance carrier, Kentucky League of Cities, for repairs to the roof.

The roof, like many others in Caneyville, was damaged when the city was battered with high winds and large hail the afternoon of March 2.

After reviewing bids from Presto Construction and Robert Hayes Contracting, both of Caneyville, commissioners accepted Presto’s $8,947 bid for the project.

The work will include replacing shingles and guttering on the west side of the fire station. When the work will begin and how long it will take was unknown late Monday.

In other action the commission:

*Approved the city’s 2012-13 fiscal year budget, which projects general fund revenues of $709,000 and spending of $500,000. Water and sewer fund revenues are expected to reach about $1.05 million, with spending topping $703,000.

* Praised the fundraising efforts of the Caneyville Fire Department in the recent Crusade for Children drive. The department raised $4,356 toward helping children with special needs across Kentucky and Indiana.

* Approved second readings of an amended floodplain ordinance and an amended 2011-12 budget. The floodplain ordinance was changed to reflect changes in state and federal policies governing construction in floodplains, and the budget was changed to more accurately state year-end revenues. The city’s fiscal year ends June 30.

* Approved buying $500 worth of frames for a project to restore and frame class photos from the old Caneyville High School.

According to a letter from project organizer Mary Leslie Davis, the Caneyville Alumni Association is trying to restore and re-frame the senior class compilation photos from 1956 to 1973, although she noted the photo for the Class of 1972 is missing.

Since the county’s high schools consolidated in 1974, the pictures have been kept at the old high school, but the damp building is taking its toll on them, the letter states.

Treating each photo to help preserve it, and re-framing it, is expected to cost about $160, for a grand total of more than $2,700 for the existing 17 photos, the letter states. In addition, the Classes of 1955, 1972 and 1974 are considering making compilation photos from individual pictures as well.

Caneyville Elementary School has agreed to display the photos when they are re-framed, Davis said.

The alumni association is seeking donations to help pay for the work. Davis said checks, made out to the Caneyville Alumni Association, can be mailed to 1041 Oak Wood Lane, Leitchfield Ky. 42754.
