A 15-year-old juvenile was charged for bringing a toy gun into the Grayson County High School during school hours on Monday, causing officers and personnel to take appropriate action when it comes to zero tolerance policies.
Leitchfield Police Department Detective Gary Troutman explained the teen was taken into custody at his home on November 10 for showing off a toy gun to his friends.
Principal Doug Robinson wanted to stress that no threat was made to anyone with the toy gun.
Robinson explained that personnel noticed the teen playing with the gun on November 9, and local authorities were contacted. He added that the student did not appear back at GCHS on Tuesday.
According to Troutman, the teen was charged through Court Designated Worker Lori East for bringing the gun to school.
“We did not know at the time that it was a toy,” Troutman said. “The toy was a type of weapon that was a look alike gun. Nobody was never in any danger.”
Troutman and School Resource Officer Bryan Langdon went to the teen’s residence and recovered the gun.
“We have zero tolerance when it comes to any type of weapon like this,” Troutman urged. “It does not matter if it is a toy. Strong action will always be taken.”
I hope the student learned a life lesson; maybe this incident will prevent a future tragedy.
With so many school shootings, I understand the Grayson County School System's policy and heavy-handedness in this matter. Maybe the judge will take into consideration the student's behavior and go lightly on the punishment doled out to the kid.
My mother often said you can't put an adult brain in a kid's head. She should know because she raised several children.
I knew that cartoon would catch on eventually and toys would probably be forbidden.
Next I expect to read that little girls are being charged with (child) neglect for leaving their dollies unattended while in school?
Now next are we to read that little girls dolls are being sent to foster care?
Oh! wait what about the little boys that have toy horses are they going to be charged with animal cruelty because they leave them unattended?
stupidhicks you hit the nail on the head (Kids play with toys and its a fact that boys play with toy guns.)
What is our society coming to? The article plainly states the boy did not threaten anyone but was showing the (TOY) to a friend.
Several years ago in the news a child was shot by law enforcement when they had a toy gun ( and
laws were passed to change how the toy guns had to look and I believe that they were to have an orange encap on the gun about a half inch to an inch in coloring on them. To signal they were TOYS and could be seen from some distance to prevent a mistaken shooting again.
Zero tolerance for weapons YES! zero tolerance for toys is absurd anywhere.
I believe that some are trying to take all forms of childhood from our children. To many children are ending up in the juvenile system for being KIDS! This told to me by a juvenile attorney.
Guess we need to invent a way for kids to be born fully grown. Let's bypass childhood all together.
