The Neighborhood Watch program, instituted by Leitchfield Police in February, has expanded to include a second group, and police are hoping the program will continue to catch on in the city.

According to Lieutenant Don Burkhead with the LPD, the second group to form a Neighborhood Watch is a group of concerned tenants at the Parkway Villa Apartments, located at 101 Penner Drive, Leitchfield.

Burkhead, who serves as a liaison between the Leitchfield Police Department and Neighborhood Watch groups, said that at the Parkway Villa group's first meeting Wednesday night (Apr. 26) at the old courthouse about 19 residents showed up to discuss a variety of issues that concerned them.

According to Burkhead, issues discussed included possible drug trafficking on the property, speeding, drinking alcohol out in the open and unsupervised children.

Burkhead said that the group was formed after he responded to a complaint at the complex and residents asked if there was something that could be done about problems in the neighborhood.

After they asked if there was anything they could do, Burkhead recommended the Neighborhood Watch program.

“So the founding of this group is a 50/50 enterprise,” Burkhead said, “between the residents and the police department.”

According to Burkhead, the captain of Leitchfield's newest Neighborhood Watch group is Stephanie Singleton and the co-captain is Mindy Lee Wright Tomes.
