Taking to the road at Hancock County Middle School, the GCMS football teams took both games last Tuesday in Hawesville.

In the opener, the seventh-grade team moved to 4-0 on the season with a 20-8 victory. In the second, the eighth-graders picked up their first win of the season against two losses with a 24-0 whitewash of the Hancock Cougars.

SEVENTH-GRADE

Grayson County started very slowly in this one, leading only 6-0 at the half. But they scored twice more in the second half to lead 20-0 before Hancock County got on the board in the closing minutes of the game against the backup defense.

After forcing Hancock County to punt on its first possession, the Cougars took over at the Hancock 44 with 3:03 left in the first period. Three runs and a pass moved the ball to the 20, where fullback Lane Rackley took a handoff and broke several tackles on his way to the end zone. A try for two-points failed, but with 42.3 seconds left in the first period, Grayson County led 6-0.

Hancock County mounted a drive in the second period, moving from their own 30, to a first down at the Grayson County 23. After moving to a second and three at the 16, Hancock was forced back on a penalty. The Cougars then sacked the quarterback twice, forcing a fumble on a fourth down play and returning it to the Cougar 48. Grayson County was then able to move to the Hancock 20, but time ran out in the half.

Grayson County took the second half kickoff and moved 47 yards in four plays to take a 14-0 lead. Talon Gary carried the final two yards for the score at the 2:15 mark, then added a two-point conversion.

In the fourth quarter, Grayson County took over at the Hancock 35 following a punt. On a first-down play, the Cougars were flagged for an illegal block, moving the ball back to the 45. But on the next play, Gary found Taylor Wright wide open over the middle and Wright took it untouched for the Cougars’ final score. The try for two failed, but with 1:57 remaining to be played in the game, Grayson County led 20-0.

Head coach Mark Gary then brought in his backup players to finish out the game and Hancock took advantage by moving 77 yards in two plays to score at the 1:14 mark. A two-point conversion made the final score 20-8.

EIGHTH-GRADE

After losing their first two games with several starters not suited up, the Cougars had everyone in this one and they Contibnued from Page A-10

dominated from the start, scoring twice on their first three plays from scrimmage.

Grayson County held on downs on Hancock’s first possession and took over at their own 42 with 3:16 left in the first period. On first down, quarterback Mason Parks kept the ball and found a big hole on the right side. Fifty-eight yards later he was in the end-zone and the rout was on. Parks ran in the two-pointer to make it 8-0.

As the second period began, the Cougars forced Hancok to punt from their own 26. Trey Sanders fielded the punt at the 49 and returned it to the Hancock 27. A flag for an illegal tackle moved the ball to the 11.

Reice McMahan carried to the three on first down, then Parks carried it the rest of the way to score with 6:27 remaining in the half. Parks ran in a two-pointer to make it 16-0.

Facing a third-and-13 situation at their own 28, Hancock tried to go to the air, but McMahan, playing linebacker on defense, tipped the pass into the air, hauled it in and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown. McMahan then threw a pass to Logan Wiseman for a two pointer that made it 24-0.

That was all the scoring in the game as neither team could mount any kind of drive the rest of the way.
