To The Editor:

On Sunday, Sept. 23, the neighbors of 512 Hilltop Road received the most wonderful gift. A yard that was overgrown so badly that you could not see that there was a house there hardly at all, except for the front stoop from time to time, was cleaned up.

The yard literally looked like a forest, and with the house packed to the ceiling with garbage bags and boxes full of what is anyone’s guess, but I suspect garbage, the property has become the perfect breeding ground for rats, mice, squirrels, rabbits, roaches, fleas, ticks, and I can only imagine what else. This has become not only a nuisance, but a health concern for all who live near and around it.

The house didn’t get this way overnight. It took over a decade of no one doing anything about it. The neighbors would get fed up on occasion and contact a city council member. We would get our hopes up as someone would come out and look at the house, only to be let down because all that would happen was a path would be cleared to the front door. Mowing a path to the door and trimming a bush does not constitute a yard mowing!

No one cared that the backyard was growing over into our yards. No one cared that the inside of the house is filled with garbage and rodents and posing a health threat to all of us around it. Now, after all these years, someone is finally doing something about it.

The neighbors of 512 Hilltop Road deeply appreciate and send our most sincere thanks to Steve Elder and Billy Dallas. We know how hard they worked on that front yard and it’s a step in the right direction. It was a terrific amount to do in one day. The families of these two men, we know, must be bursting with pride. Their fathers and husbands stood up and did what “no one” else would do.
