The streets of the Public Square in Leitchfield may see some major changes in the near future thanks to a program run by the Kentucky state government.

Leitchfield city Mayor William H. Thomason received notice the city has been accepted as a candidate into the Main Street Renaissance Program by the Kentucky Heritage Council.

The goal of this program is to encourage downtown revitalization and economic development within the context of historic preservation.

Grayson County Industrial Consultant, Dudley Cooper, will attend training at the Kentucky Main Street Best Practices Conference in Frankfort on October 20-22.

This will allow for Cooper to learn more about the program and how Leitchfield can move towards the next step of becoming a certified city.

“The bad thing is there are not a lot of funds for this program but Governor Steve Beshear has promised that he has every intention of beefing up the Main Street Program in the near future,” said Cooper.

Candidate status is the first step into the program and the temporary status awarded to a start-up program.

Once all the requirements have been met to qualify the city will the move into certified city status.

In other business:

• The council heard the second reading and approved the rezoning of 627 White Street from R-2 residential to R-5 multi-family residential.

• The Leitchfield Fire Department will use the home located at 627 White Street for training. Saturday, October 10, the fire department will set fire to the home and use this along with Clarkson for training.

• The Leitchfield City Council will be meeting for a two-hour work session on Monday, October 12 at city hall at 5:00pm. The council will be working to set some future goals for the city and possibly a financial plan for the goals.

• The 2nd Sunday Walk that was scheduled for this Sunday, October 12 has been canceled.
