Grayson County’s middle school girls went on the road last Tuesday and came away from Muhlenberg South with a split of the two games.

The 7th-grade girls allowed just two made free throws to the Suns as they rolled to a 38-2 win.

The 8th-grade girls missed 18 free throws in a one-point, 32-31 loss the the Suns.

Grayson County held the Lady Suns scoreless in the first and third quarters and gave up single points to South’s Lindsey Winters and Katie Porter in the second and fourth quarters in a rout at Greenville.

The Lady Cougars closed out the first quarter with an 8-0 run to take a 12-4 lead, but then had great difficulty getting anything to fall as the Suns made a comeback.

South pulled to within a point at 15-14 with 1:25 left in the second quarter, but the Lady Cougars scored the last three points to lead 18-14 at the half.

The Suns then opened the third quarter with eight unanswered points, including three straight fast-break lay-ups by Bethany Smith, to take a lead they would not five back.

Kaylan Shull hit a lay-up with 27 seconds left in the game to make it 31-28, but Desiree Shultz hit 1-of-2 free throws with 17 seconds left to make it a four-point game.

Shull later hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer, but the Lady Cougars came up a point short.

Shultz led the Suns with 12 points, while Chasity Terry added eight.

Katie Hayes led all scorers in the game with 13 points and led the team with six steals. Shull scored nine and added five rebounds, three assists and four steals.
