He was born in Breckinridge County, Ky., on July 4,1923, the son of Owen and Devia LeMaster Wheeler. He was a member of Westview United Methodist Church and retired from Civil Service. He walked the length of Italy during WWII, and is an Army veteran.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Frances Smiley Wheeler of Westview; three sons, Ronald (Ruth Anne) Wheeler of Hardinsburg, Ky., John (Brenda) Wheeler of Cox's Creek, Ky., Terry (Lola) Wheeler of LaGrange, Ky.; and one sister, Jane Bell of Elizabethtown, Ky. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Rhonda Glenn, John Wheeler Jr., Robin Anne Brown, and Missy Lynn Morris; seven great-grandchildren, Shane Glenn, Austin Wheeler, David and Daniel Brown, Abby and Eli Morris, and Connor Bevil.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 3, 2007 at Trent-Dowell Funeral Home in Hardinsburg with Rev. Rick Bourland officiating.
Burial was in the Kingswood Cemetery.
