My name is Jerry Guffey, and I am running for County Attorney of Grayson County. I have practiced law in Leitchfield for more than thirty years, and have served as a prosecutor for approximately eighteen years. I graduated from Clarkson High School (1965), Western Kentucky University (1974), and the University of Kentucky College of Law (1977). The time between Clarkson High School and Western Kentucky University was interrupted by service in the U. S. Army. In addition to my education and experience, I have taken the opportunity for additional training that is only offered to sworn prosecutors. I have training and experience as a prosecutor that exceeds that of any other attorney seeking this office in Grayson County.

I served as Assistant Commonwealth Attorney from 1978 to 1981 and from 1987 to 1989. I served as Grayson County Attorney from January 1982 through December 1985. Since July 2000, I have served as Assistant Grayson County Attorney, with primary responsibility for Juvenile Court.

In addition to my prosecutorial experience, I have been active in the Republican Party for many years. I have been a registered Republican voter since 1965 and have been involved in Republican Party politics since I returned to Leitchfield from law school. I served as a member of the Kentucky Republican State Central Committee from 1981 to 1996 and from 2000 to 2004; as Republican Vice-Chairman of Second Congressional District from 1982 to 1984; as Republican Chairman of Second Congressional District from 1984 to 1992 and from 2000 to 2004; and as Republican Chairman of Grayson County from 1996 to 2000. Additionally, I took a leave from my private practice for five months to serve as Campaign Manager for the successful Ron Lewis for Congress 1996 Campaign.

I served as Vice-Chairman and later, Chairman, of the Board of Trustees, Methodist Children’s Homes of Kentucky, from 1978 to 1994. I have served as a member of the Board of Directors of Grayson Manor since 1979. I also served as a member of the original E-911 Board.

I am the sixth of eight children born to the Rev. Riley Guffey and Lena Burchett Guffey. I was born on a farm, but grew up mainly in parsonages wherever my father served. At the time I graduated from high school, my father was serving as pastor to the Clarkson Methodist Church, Little Clifty Methodist Church, Rock Creek Methodist Church, Summit Methodist Church and Duff Methodist Church. I have lived in Grayson County since 1963, except for my years in the Army and while pursuing my education in Bowling Green and Lexington.

I married Sharon Spencer just after her graduation from Clarkson High School in 1966. We have two children, Wes Guffey and Mysha Leigh Guffey Thompson. We have four grandchildren, two with each of our children.

Wes Guffey is a Baptist minister and an independent contractor. Wes is married to Karen Childress Guffey. Their son, Jacob Guffey, is a student at Lindsey Wilson College. Their daughter, Rachel Guffey, is a senior in high school.

Leigh Thompson is a speech pathologist. She is married to Timmy Thompson. Leigh has two children, Emily Thompson, age eight, and Eli Wesley Thompson, age two.

Grayson County has been my home for more than thirty years. My children, and now my grandchildren are a part of this community. I would appreciate the opportunity to make every effort toward making it a safe place for all of our families. I feel that the Grayson County Attorney’s Office can play a key role in accomplishing that goal.

The primary issue in this campaign is which of the candidates are best qualified to serve as the county’s prosecutor and legal advisor. We are lucky in Grayson County to have well-trained and competent police agencies. I believe my experience and the many hours of specialized training I have received will enable me to carry out the duties of the County Attorney’s Office better than any other candidate. I have many years of experience in advising the officers in the conduct of their duties. I also have experience in advising the Fiscal Court with regard to legal matters.

In addition, I presently work with the staff of the County Attorney’s Office. If I am elected, the transition will be smooth, with the present staff continuing to serve the people of Grayson County.

I ask for your vote and support in this campaign. Of all the candidates for the office, I feel that my qualifications make me the best choice for you to serve as your County Attorney for the next four years.
