The JV boys soccer team picked up a 4-1 win on Saturday as they played host to the Clinton County Bulldogs.
The young Cougars got goals from four different players as they controlled the action for most of the game.
Grayson County had several opportunities in the opening minutes but were unable to get the ball into the net. But in the 10th minute of play, eighth-grader Conner Schultz got the Cougars on the board. Schultz won a loose ball about 20 yards out and fired a shot past the Clinton keeper to make it 1-0
Both teams missed good opportunities over the next 19 minutes, but neither could crack the goal line. But Zach Williams sent a ball to Amos Goodman in the middle and Goodman fired it in to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead.
Just a few seconds later, and just seconds before the end of the first half, Bulldog Glen England got his team on the board. England dribbled the ball nicely in from near mid-field and put a 20-yard shot past Cougar goal keeper Carson Zurmehly to make it a 2-1 game at the half.
England threatened again 10 minutes into the second half when he was all alone chasing a through ball near the Cougar goal. Zurmehly had just one chance and that was to come out to get the ball, and he was just able to beat England to the ball to save the goal. England was shaken up on the play, but managed to stay in the game.
Just a couple minutes later, the Cougars got their third goal and took firm control on the game. Sophomore Eric Liptak sent a left-footed shot into the net from about 20 yards out and the Cougars led 3-1.
The final goal of the game came in the 45th minute. Junior Alex Burden put a hard shot on goal from about 15 yards out that was slowed down by the goal keeper, but when he couldn’t gain control, saw it trickle across the goal line to make it 4-1.
