Those with summer travel plans that involve traveling on Interstate 65 over the weekend will need to find an alternate route, as a portion of the interstate will be completely closed down between July 20 and July 23, according to Andrea Clifford, Public Information Officer for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

The downtown Louisville area of I-65 between I-64 and I-264 will be closed in order to expedite the paving of the final asphalt surface on the southbound lanes of the roadway.

According to Matt Bullock, chief district engineer for the Department of Highways, Louisville District, explained that paving all three lanes at once with “provide a better quality product on the roadway,” and will help avoid cracking and potholes later on.

Motorists will be detoured via westbound I-64 to eastbound I-264, which connects with southbound I-65, Clifford said, since all entrance and exit ramps will be closed in the paving area from around 7 p.m. on Friday until approximately 5 a.m. on Monday morning.
