Lane Rackley grabbed an entry pass under the Cougar basket. Rackley finished with 14 points and five rebounds in the 7th-grade’s 53-17 win over Cub Run.
The Cougar middle school teams opened their regular season last Tuesday with a sweep of the visiting Cub Run Cubs at Cougar Gym.
In the opener, the sixth-graders defeated the Cubs 33-19. The seventh-grade team got scoring from 11 of the 14 players on the bench as they won going away 53-17. The eighth-graders then got scoring from 12 of their 13 players as they crushed the visitors 64-22 to complete the sweep.
SIXTH-GRADE GAME
Grayson County held the visitors scoreless in the first period as they took a 9-0 lead into the second period. They led by seven, 11-4 at the half.
Grayson County opened the third period with a 9-0 run to grab a 20-4 lead at the 3:13 mark and the outcome was pretty much decided. The Cougars led by nine, 22-13 heading into the fourth quarter.
Blaine Sullivan scored 10 points for the Cubs to lead all scorers in the game. Gage Akridge and Dylan Logsdon shared the team lead for the Cougars with six points each. Cole Akridge had five, while Zac Williams, Tanner Tyra and Colton Williams all had four. Weston Shull added two points to complete the Cougar scoring.
SEVENTH-GRADE GAME
The Cougars scored the first 15 point of the game to take the Cubs out of things early on. Talon Gary scored seven of his nine points and Lane Rackley added seven as the Cougars grabbed a 21-2 lead after one period of play. They led 25-8 at the half.
Cub Run opened the scoring in the third quarter, but the Cougars responded with eight straight to go up by 23 points 33-10 with 2:43 left in the period. They led by 27, 42-15 heading into the fourth quarter.
Rackley led all scorers in the game, finishing with 14 points and he also led the Cougars on the boards, pulling down five boards. In addition to his nine points, Gary led the team in assists with five and added two steals.
Logan Stevenson scored seven points and Braxton Bratcher has six. Wyatt Skaggs and Zac Williams scored four each, while Logan Ramsey, Dylan Woodcock, Corbin Harris and Cole Akridge all had two. Colton Williams added one point to complete the scoring.
EIGHTH-GRADE GAME
The Cubs stayed close in the first half of the opening period, but a 14-2 Cougar run turned a 7-5 lead into a 21-7 advantage as the teams headed into the second period.
Grayson County opened the second period with a 9-4 run and led by 19 points, 30-11 with 3:35 left in the first half. They led 32-14 at the intermission.
Grayson County put the game completely out of reach when they opened the third quarter by outscoring the Cubs 12-2 to take a 28-point lead, 44-16 at the 2:53 mark. They led by 30 points, 50-20 as the fourth quarter began.
Keith Logsdon scored 10 points to lead the visitors. Brett Majors led the Cougars in scoring with 11 points and added five assists to lead the team. Bret Johnston and Dylan Yaden both scored nine points and Johnston led the team on the boards with nine rebounds and added four assists.
Lane Decker and Colton Hayes had six points apiece, while Dylan Mahurin, Jameson Van Meter, Sheldon Jones and Talon Gary all had four. Josh Willis added three points, while Kyle Travis, and Clay Priddy had two each to complete the scoring. Travis added eight rebounds, while Jones led the team with five steals.
