The Grayson County Schools and the Lincoln Trail Health Department are offering free H1N1 flu virus vaccines at two local elementary schools.

Parents were notified by telephone with the OneCall message that the Health Department will begin giving the H1N1 vaccinations next Monday.

The vaccines will be offered from 3:30 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Monday afternoon at Caneyville Elementary School and on Tuesday, November 24th at Clarkson Elementary School.

“This is only for students and then we hope to be able to administer the vaccine to adults,” said Grayson County Superintendent Barry Anderson. “The cost is free to parents but they must be with their child.”

Gigi Meredith with the Lincoln Trail Health Department said the department is starting with outlying schools and moving toward the center of the county.

“We will be doing only students,” she added. “Any other children in the family or adults who fall into the first tier categories will need to schedule an appointment at either the health department or their doctor’s office. All permission for vaccination forms must be signed by a parent or legal guardian.”

School staff will not be vaccinated at this time.

“Once the health department is able to open the vaccine to everyone, they will visit each school and vaccinate staff,” said Meredith. “which is policy the department follows now with the seasonal flu vaccines.’

The goal of the health district is to have offered all school aged children the vaccine by Christmas break.
