Behind senior Jordan Boumds’ three goals, the Cougar varsity soccer team shutout Taylor County 6-0 in Campbellsville on Thursday.

Seniors Presley Cilyok, Damon Jones and Michael Thomas also had goals as the Cougars improved their overall record to 6-3 with the win. Taylor County saw its record fall to 2-5 for the season.

The Cougars controlled the action throughout the game and kept the Cardinals bottled up in their own end for most of the time. The Cardinals had just one ball on goal in the game, and senior goal keeper Colton Cockriel had no trouble handling the soft bouncer.

Grayson County got on the board in the 11th minute of play. Cilyok took a pass from Bounds and put a shot on goal from about 15 yards out that deflected up off a defender. The ball arced over the hands of Cardinal keeper Hunter Underwood, and took two bounces into the goal to make it 1-0.

In the 16th minute, Bounds took a pass from junior Trey Sanders and took the ball in near the left upright. Bounds put a hard, left-footed shot on goal that Underwood got a hand on. But when the Cardinal keeper could not control the ball, it trickled past him and into the goal to make it 2-0.

Just a couple minutes later, Grayson County was back at it again. Thomas connected with Bounds, who put a left-footed crossing shot into the opposite corner of the net and the Cougars led 3-0.

The Cougars had several more opportunities in the closing minutes of the first half, but could not score again. Three times shots from close in were directed high over the top of the Cardinal goal and at the half, the Cougars led 3-0.

Less than two minutes into the second half, the Cougars connected again. Thomas sent a long ball ahead to Cilyok on the right wing. Cilyok took the ball in a bit, then sent a perfect centering pass to Jones right in front of the Cardinal goal, and Jones sent it home to make it 4-0.

In the 50th minute of play, senior Isaac Clemons found himself with the ball, deep in the right corner of the field. He brought the ball in along the baseline and sent a beautiful centering pass to Thomas all alone in front of the Cardinal goal. Underwood had no chance as Thomas fired from about 10 yards out and the Cougars led 5-0.

The Cougars kept up the pressure, with chance after chance on the Cardinal goal, but it wasn’t until about six minutes left when the Cougars scored their final goal. It was probably the prettiest goal of the night as Jones fed Bounds from the left side and the senior picked up his third and final goal of the night to make the final score 6-0.

The Cougars will be in action again this Saturday afternoon when they host Barren County at Cougar Field. JV action is set to begin at 11 a.m., with the varsity tilt to start around 12:30 p.m.
