In a special called meeting Thursday, September 14, the Caneyville City Commission opened the bids for the second phase of the Waste Water Treatment Plant Rehabilitation.

The city has received two bids and there was more than a $100,000 difference in the bids.

The Southeastern Environmental Group bid $278,684 and Do-All Construction, Inc bid $147,250.

“The reason for the large difference in the bids is because there are a lot of unknowns in the project,” said Kenvirons representative Vernon Shanklin, “So I am not at all surprised there is such a large difference in the bids.”

Shanklin informed the commission that both bid packages would be reviewed and one would be awarded on September 21 at 11:30 a.m., at Caneyville City Hall during a special called meeting.

These bids do not include the costs that will be incurred at Ohio County Balefill or Leitchfield Waste Water Plant for the sludge that will be delivered to both locations.

The Commission also held the second reading of the 2009 property tax ordinance. The ordinance will allow for a four percent increase in revenue for the City of Caneyville property taxes.

In other business:

• City Attorney Mike Alvey had advised the city not to sign the standard contract with Kenvirons that was presented at the August meeting. Alvey submitted three items to be included in the contract that would protect the city if there were problems and the problems were the fault of the engineers.

• After a lengthy discussion it was decided the commission would table the issue until more information could be gathered.

• The commission heard the second reading and approved the Nuisance Ordinance.

• The commission agreed to close a portion of Third Street from Hoover Majors Insurance Agency to the Post Office and reverse the traffic from Hoover Majors Insurance Agency to North Main Street. Also to close Vine Street from East Maple Street to River Park Drive for the Caneyville Fair on September 30th thru October 3rd.

• The commission agreed to sponsor the old fashioned games at the 2009 Caneyville Fair.

• Theresa Armstrong requested a letter of support from the city for a new ballfield in Leitchfield. She is working to obtain a Land and Water Conservation Grant. Commission tabled the matter until the October meeting.

• Avery Fleener reported he passed the Wastewater Collection System Operator Class II test. The commission commended him for this accomplishment.

• The commission discussed placing a back on the Welcome to Caneyville signs.

The city clerk was asked to obtain a price.
