A Wednesday afternoon accident on Highway 62 near Grayson County High School led to the untimely death of a 34-year-old Caneyville woman.
Elizabeth Jennings, a young mother of four, sustained fatal injuries in the head-on collision between the minivan she was driving and a Chevy pick-up truck driven by Patrick Trujilla, of Millwood, according to Deputy Chris Bates of the Grayson County Sheriff’s Department.
Bates said that weather conditions played a significant factor in the incident, with at least one of the vehicles hydroplaning prior to the collision.
There was one passenger in Jennings’ vehicle, her fifteen-year-old daughter, who was seated in the front passenger’s seat; and two passengers in Trujilla’s vehicle, his 2- and 3-year-old daughters, who were seated in the second row of the extended cab truck.
All five of the individuals involved were transported by Grayson County EMS to Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center for treatment. Jennings was later transported to Louisville.
Chief Carl “Moon” Smith, of the Leitchfield Fire Department said that he arrived at the scene of the accident after Trujilla and the three minors had been taken to TLRMC, and assisted in the extrication of Jennings from the minivan.
Firefighters worked in rain and hail, using the jaws of life to remove Jennings from the wreckage.
According to Grayson County Coroner Joe Brad Hudson, Jennings passed away later that day from injuries sustained in the accident.
