Playing at St. Romuald Middle School, in Hardinsburg, the Lady Cougar volleyball teams came home with one win, one loss and one tie against the Rebels.
In the first contest, the sixth-grade squad had to settle for a 1-1 tie (15-12, 11-15) after giving up a four-point lead and allowing the Rebels to score eight unanswered points to win the second set.
The seventh-graders continued their excellent play by beating the Rebels in straight sets, 21-8, 21-14.
In the eighth-grade match, the Lady Cougars dropped the first set in overtime 20-22, but roared back to take the second set 21-15. But in the 15-point tie-breaker, they squandered a match-point, then allowed the Rebels to score three straight points to win the match 14-16.
SIXTH-GRADE GAME
The Lady Cougars opened the game scoring the first five points only to see the Rebels answered with six straight to grab the lead.
With Megan Duvall serving for Grayson County tied at 6-6, the Rebels committed two straight hitting errors to give the Lady Cougars a lead they would not give back.
Leading by two, 11-9, Chloe Thornberry served three straight aces for the Lady Cougars to bring it to set-point, 14-9, before the Rebels gained a sideout.
Paige Pollock served an ace for the Rebels to make it 14-11 before the Lady Cougars had a set fall to make it 14-12. But Grayson County took the next volley to win the first set 15-12.
The Lady Cougars fell behind 4-7 in the second set, but seven straight points, including three aces from Duvall gave the Lady Cougars an 11-7 lead. But a bad set gave the ball to the Rebels and the Lady Cougars never got it back.
When the Lady Cougars just could not seem to get a return on a serve, the Rebels scored seven straight to take the second set 11-15. No tie-breaker was played.
SEVENTH-GRADE GAME
The Lady Cougars started quickly in the first set, scoring the first five points, then increasing their lead to 7-1, then 13-2.
Keisha Dennis served a set-point at 20-6, but sent it wide. The Rebels were later called for being in the net, giving Grayson County the 21-8 win.
The Lady Cougars took an early 5-1 lead, but the Rebels fought back to within a point of the lead at 8-7. Jasmine Smart then served a pair of aces in a 5-0 Cougar run that saw them take a six-point advantage, 13-7.
The Rebels got as close as three points, but Julie Carroll took the serve at match-point, 20-14, and served an ace to give the Lady Cougars the straight-set victory.
EIGHTH-GRADE GAME
The Lady Cougars led by four points twice in the early going, but the Rebels came back to tie things 10-10.
Grayson County scored the next three points to lead 13-10, but St. Romuald responded with five straight to take a lead they would not give back.
The Rebels served a set-point at 17-20, but the Lady Cougars won the next volley, then scored the next two points, including an ace from Smart, to tie the score 20-20.
But when Grayson County was unable to make a return on the next volley, the Rebels took the serve and won the set on a ace by Gracie Rothrock.
In the second set, the Lady Cougars took an early 6-2 lead and never gave it up. They led by as many as seven points, but led by two, 17-15 when Miranda Boaz served out for the win. Boaz had a pair of aces in the four-point run.
Grayson County trailed 1-4 in the early going of the 15-point tie-breaker, but came back to lead by as many as four points, 13-9.
The Rebels pulled back to within a point at 13-12, but a service error gave it back to Grayson County’s Boaz, who served match-point at 14-12. St. Romuald’s Rothrock earned the rally-point with a kill, giving the ball back to the Rebels.
A Grayson County hitting error tied things at 14-14 and the Lady Cougars called a timeout. The Lady Cougars then committed two more hitting errors to give the win to the Rebels, 14-16.
