Every year the Grayson County Girl Scout Service Unit hosts an event to collect items that Grayson County children need. This year the Family Resource Centers in our local schools are asking for socks. Grayson County children are coming to school with no socks, in adult size socks, dirty socks, torn socks or the child is wearing the same pair of socks all week. The Grayson County Girl Scout Leaders are working on an event to collect the socks and educate Grayson County Children on many areas of safety. The “Sock it to Safety” event will take place at the Grayson County Middle School on November 30th, from 6:00-8:30. Community agencies will interact with the children from 6:00-7:30 about the areas that they all specialize in while the parents attend a workshop in the school auditorium about Bullying. At 7:30 we will begin moving the children to the school auditorium to enjoy time with the South Central Kids on the Block. Girls and boys alike are invited to attend this event. Admission to the Sock to Safety event is just a pair of socks from each person that enters. Just to mention a few areas of safety that will be covered are cave safety, fire safety, bicycle safety, electrical safety, self esteem, emergency preparedness, finger printing and much more! When children enter they will be given a safety activity packet donated by Modern Woodmen. We will also provide the forms that can be completed and turned into the Grayson County Health Department where each child can receive a free bicycle helmet. Recently we have suffered a great loss in our Girl Scout community. Dorothy a 14 year old girl committed suicide on October 22nd because she was being bullied in school. She was a sister to many foster children, a dedicated Girl Scout and friends to many that was around her. She and many other young people have chosen this path of suicide to end their lives. Girl Scouts want to join others in the fight to prevent bullying and be part of the cure. Recently in the Edmonson County community a young man in Edmonson County choose the same decision as Dorothy. Robert Carter from the The Kentucky Center for School Safety (Sponsored by: Grayson County Girl Scouts) will be presenting to parents ways to prevent bullying from 6:00-7:30 while the children are learning how to be safe with local vendors. Then at 7:30 pm the children and their parents will enjoy a puppet show with The South Central Kids on the Block (Sponsored by: Grayson County Tourism). Plese provide any free advertising that you can for this event.
