The Lady Cougar basketball team closed out its abbreviated summer schedule with a pair of wins at Elizabethtown High School Wednesday evening.

In the afternoon game, Maddie Stewart and Grace White both scored 19 points as the Lady Cougars defeated the Green County Dragons 59-37.

In the late game, the Lady Cougars ran away from Waggoner, out of Louisville, by a score of 48-33.

GREEN COUNTY

The Dragons brought just seven players into this game and it may have been a case of them running out of gas against the deeper Lady Cougars. Green County raced out to a 10-point advantage, 13-3 at the 11:38 mark, only to see the Lady Cougars come roaring back.

Grayson County outscored the Dragons 17-3, including the last eight in a row, to go in front 20-16 with 1:51 left in the first half. The Lady Cougars still led by four points, 26-22 at the break.

After the Lady Cougars increased their lead to eight points, 31-23 following a Stewart free throw at the 15:34 mark, the Dragons clawed their way back into the game. A three-pointer at 17:47 pulled the Dragons to within three points of the lead, 33-30.

But over the next 10 minutes the Lady Cougars forced seven Dragon turnovers, including five steals and held them scoreless. That allowed Grayson County to score 15 unanswered points to lead by 18, 48-30 with 7:16 left in the game. The Dragons were never closer than 17 points the rest of the way.

In addition to her 19 points, White finished with five rebounds and three steals. Stewart added four rebounds to her 19 points.

Montana Woosley had an outstanding game for Grayson County, scoring six points, pulling down five rebounds and adding two assists. Sloane Embry had five points, including a three-pointer, while Hannah Saltsman and Sarah Pierce had three apiece. Pierce also added a team-high five assists.

Cortney Tomes and Jessica Johnson closed out the scoring with two points each.

WAGGONER

The Lady Cats had a decided size advantage over the Lady Cougars, but they were young at some key positions and a lack of cohesiveness hurt them.

The Lady Cats opened the game trying to press the Lady Cougars in the full court, but had little success. Grayson County broke the press easily and got free for break-away basket attempts time after time.

Grayson County never trailed after scoring the first eight points of the game. A Waggoner basket at the 14:11 mark made it a 10-5 game when the Lady Cougars broke it open with a 15-1 run to make it 25-6 at the 8:50 mark.

Grayson County increased its lead to 21 points, 32-11 with 1:12 left in the half before Waggoner closed out the scoring with a three-pointer to make it 32-14 at the half.

With the game apparantly in hand, the Lady Cougars seemed to be going through the motions at the start of the second half and allowed the Lady Cats to cut the lead to 14 points, 36-22 at the 10: 31 mark.

The Lady Cougars responded with six unanswered points to push the lead back up to 20 points, 42-22 with 8:16 left to play. The Lady Cats cut the lead back to 14 points once more, 47-33, but with just 50 seconds left it was too late to matter.

Stewart led all scorers with 15 points. White and Johnson both scored six points, with White adding four rebounds, four assists and two steals. Johnson had three boards.

Embry and Jodi Decker both scored five points and Embry added three steals. Pierce, Saltsman and Woosley all had three points, and Woosley added five rebounds. Tomes scored two points to complete the scoring.
