Grayson County’s Lady Cougars left no room for drama Monday night in the 12th District Tournament opener, pounding Whitesville Trinity 76-27 to punch their ticket for next week’s 3rd Region Tournament to be held in Owensboro.
There was little doubt about the outcome after the Lady Cougars scored the first 10 points of the game, then led 17-4 after the first period of play. They led by 26 points, 39-13 at the half.
The Lady Cougars will now face Edmonson County, 56-46 winners over Butler County in the other semi-final, on Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Butler County High School. The Lady Cougars beat the LadyCats twice in Brownsville, but lost at Cougar Gym during the regular season.
Coach Daniel Pharris, coaching in place of head coach Brad Johnson who was in the last game of a three-game suspension, dressed 14 girls for this game and 13 of them cracked the scoring column.
Senior guard Katie Hayes had one of her best games of the year, hitting two three-pointers and finishing with a team-high 12 points for the Lady Cougars. Whitesville’s Liza Howard also had 12 points for the Lady Raiders.

When the lady Cougars opened the third quarter with a 13-2 run, they led 52-15 with 2:58 remaining in the period and the clock began running continuously through the mercy rule. Whenever a team gets ahead by 35 points or more in the second half, the clock begins running continuously, stopping only for timeouts and free throws.
Grace White and Maddie Stewart both finished with nine points, and White led the Lady Cougars with seven rebounds. Stewart added five steals. Cortney Tomes came off the bench to provide eight points, four rebounds and three steals.
Jodi Decker scored six points, Kaylan Shull had five, and Allie Horton and Jessica Johnson both had four points. Shull led the team with six steals and Horton had five.
