Stars end Cougars’ season 41-18
By Don Brown
In a season in which scoring was at a premium, the Cougar eighth-graders found themselves nearly incapable of getting the ball in the basket in Tuesday’s Green River Valley Conference Tournament opener against the Muhlenberg North Stars.
That inability to score, plus some rebounding deficiencies, led to their season coming to an end with a 41-18 loss to the Stars.
The Cougars led just once in the game, 2-0 following a baseline runner by Jackson Parker at the 5:37 mark. The Stars responded by closing out the first quarter on an 11-0 run to lead 11-2 heading into the second period.
North’s Carter Tyler made it 13 unanswered points when he opened the second period with a lay-up at the 5:27 mark to make it 13-2. Jack Davis ended the Stars’ run with 1-of-2 at the line with 5:12 left in the second period.
North scored the next five points to give them a 15-point advantage, 18-3. Parker later hit a three-pointer with 1:25 left in the first half which cut the Cougar deficit to 12 at 18-6, but the Stars scored the last basket to make it 20-6 as the teams went to their locker rooms at the half.
Grayson County had 11 possessions in the third quarter and missed shots in eight of them. They scored just five points in the period but still managed to shave a point off their deficit as they held the Stars to just four points to trail by 13, 24-11 heading into the fourth quarter.
Davis scored on a lay-up at the start of the final period to make it an 11-point margin, 24-13, but the Cougars would never be closer. The Stars closed out the period by outscoring the Cougars 17-5 the rest of the way to win going away.
No one reached double figures in the game, but North’s Will Nofsinger led all scorers with nine points.
Rylee Shoemaker hit a pair of three pointers to lead the Cougars in scoring with six points, and he added three rebounds and a steal. Parker and Davis both finished with five points and Jordan Stallings added two to complete the Cougar scoring.
