Ohio County’s Eagles put up three goals in the first half of their match with Grayson County on Thursday, and they made them stand for a 4-0 victory over the Cougars.
In the earlier JV match-up, the Cougars also did not score, but they held the Eagles scoreless as well as the two evenly-matched teams battled to a 0-0 tie.
After battling to a standstill, the JV Cougars had the best chance of the day with about five seconds left. A crossing pass in front of the Eagle goal nearly found Cody Watkins, who put a swing on the ball. Eagle goalie Jacob Hohimer came out of the net and snatched it away at the last second, just like Lucy did to Charlie Brown so many times.
In the varsity contest, the Cougars had a couple of chances early. Lane Decker put a shot on goal that was deflected over the top of the net. Conner Schultz had a hard shot fly well over the goal as well.
But the Eagles started to maintain control in the Cougar end of the field and they made it pay in the 14th minute of play. Gaining control of the ball in the mid-field, an Eagle put a perfect ball onto the foot of Rhett Baggerly, who was streaking down the left side. Baggerly brought it down and sent a centering pass to Chris Logsdon, who beat Cougar goalie Jonathan Reynolds to make it 1-0.
Less than three minutes later, Logsdon got his second goal of the night as he took a pass from John Bailey to the right of the Grayson County goal and sent it across the goal mouth, past a diving Reynolds to make it 2-0.
Head coach Josh Baldwin then replaced Reynolds in goal with freshman Carson Zurmehly, who starts for the JV squad. Zurmehly was victimized in the 35th minute when Alex Lindsey gained control on the left side, about 35 yards out. Lindsey surprised everyone, including his teammates, when he let fly with a laser shot toward the goal that sailed past Zurmehly, making it 3-0.
That would be all the scoring in the game. Zurmehly made several nice saves in the second half to keep the score at 3-0, but the Cougars were stymied offensively.
Grayson County had several good chances in the closing minutes. In the 73rd minute, Josh Willis sent a ball through to Brent Crawford right in front of the Eagle goal. But Crawford’s shot, from about 10 yards out, deflected off an Eagle defender and bounded away.
With a little more than two minutes remaining, Conner Schultz sent a perfect crossing pass to Willis. As the goalie came out and whiffed trying to get to the ball, Willis had an empty net, but his header sailed just wide, ending the Cougars’ best chance to score.
With just seconds remaining, the Eagles got one last goal when McCord Thomas put a through ball in to Lindsey, who was battling three Cougar defenders. But Lindsey was able to fight off the defenders and beat Zurmehly high and to the left to make the final score 4-0.
