People frequently use the term “community” when describing Grayson County.

According to the Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary, the primary definition of “community” is “a unified body of individuals.” That definition, I think, rather succinctly describes the people of Grayson County.

When I say almost all Grayson Countians know each other and, for the most part, truly care about one another, I’m not exaggerating. The people who have lived here from childhood grew up alongside the same people their entire lives. That, combined with the close proximity, leads to a familial mentality that you see only in small towns.

When I was growing up, I was aware of this phenomena, but I didn’t fully understand it until I returned from college and started working here, especially at the newspaper. Grayson Countians follow the news because they genuinely care about what happens to them and their fellow residents.

That this is true is never more obvious to me than when I see public feedback regarding a story I’ve written about a car accident. Those stories spark an interest that you just don’t see in other types of news stories.

Scroll through Facebook comments on a car accident story, and you’ll see numerous comments sending prayers and positive thoughts to those involved in the crash. That’s legitimate concern and care.

A small town is like a pond - toss in a pebble, and the ripples will reach its furthest edges.

I’m proud to be from a small town.
