“The Second Amendment”
The Second Amendment to the Constitution, adopted Dec. 15, 1791, says, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Over the passing years since 1791, the Militia has been replaced by the Army, Navy, and Air Force to protect our State; there is no longer a need for we citizens to organize a Militia on a moment’s notice for protection against an enemy. The “Arms” referred to in the Second Amendment were single-shot muzzle loaders. The forefathers could never have imagined a six-shot revolver, much less an AK-47.
It is unfortunate we have a strong organization, the National Rifle Association, that doesn’t take the lead in proposing good laws for gun control. However, rather than proposing any good laws for gun control, under the guise of the Second Amendment, the NRA does just the opposite, fighting any law that may have any restriction on guns and gun users. The NRA’s membership is large, and this keeps some of our cowardly, irresponsible elected officials from doing the right thing on gun control. It is hard to believe these officials are so mentally incompetent that they can’t see the Second Amendment was good for the State in 1791 but, when strictly applied, is not good for 2014.
