ALTON — The New Year symbolized change in more ways than one for Jamesha Wheeler, 19, of Alton.

Wheeler gave birth to a girl, Journi Vaughn, at 7:36 a.m. Wednesday at Alton Memorial Hospital. Journi’s father is Justin Vaughn Sr. On the mother’s side, the grandparents are James Wheeler and Tisha Davis; on the father’s side, the grandmother is Patricia Stewart.

Wheeler said she had contractions all day Tuesday and ended up at the hospital at 10 p.m.

“The contractions were horrible; the labor was easy,” Wheeler said.

Journi is Wheeler’s first child. She said she had a good experience at Alton Memorial.

“It was great,” she said. “I had really good nurses. They were understanding because I wasn’t the nicest person.”

She named her daughter Journi to reflect her experience during pregnancy.

“There’s a lot of ups and downs; it’s like a roller coaster, a lot of mood swings,” she said.

Having her child on New Year’s Day gave the holiday added significance.

“It’s a new beginning,” she said.
