Former Carrollton Hawks pitcher Sam Coonrod was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the fifth round of the Major League Baseball draft on Friday.
The 6-foot-2 Coonrod, who just completed his junior year at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, was the 148th pick overall. The former Telegraph Player of the Year helped Carrollton to a Class 1A state championship in 2011.
Coonrod attracted the interest of scouts when he hit 98 mph with his fastball as a freshman and matched the velocity last summer in the Cape Cod League. Scouts have concerned with his inconsistency and intrigued with his live arm.
At SIUC, the 21-year-old right-hander is coming off a season where he went 2-6 with a 2.87 ERA. In 84 2/3 innings, Coonrod allowed 70 hits, walked 47 and struck out 77. For his career, he is 8-17 with a 3.86 ERA in 228 1/3 innings.
