Registration has begun for United Way of Central Kentucky’s two free financial education workshops to be held in Leitchfield.
The workshops, “Money Matters” and “Check It Out,” are part of United Way’s BankOn initiative and will be held at at the Leitchfield Elizabethtown Community and Technical College (ECTC) campus at 5:30 p.m. on September 9 and Sept. 23.
The first, “Money Matters,” will cover budgeting, creating a savings plan, and increasing income. The second, “Check It Out,” will cover how to handle a checking account.
The purpose of the workshops and the BankOn initiative is to help those without a checking account get one and, consequently, save money, said United Way Representative Sarah Gonzalez.
According to United Way, individuals without a checking account could lose over $800.00 a year in check-cashing fees and money orders.
The workshops are open to anyone who has no banking history, has been denied a checking account, needs to refresh or learn budgeting skills, or needs a second chance at financial stability, according to United Way.
Both workshops will be taught by Grayson County Cooperative Extension Service Family and Consumer Sciences Agent and BankOn Volunteer Natalie Taul.
After participants complete the two workshops, they will receive a certificate from United Way to take to one of the organization’s partnering banks to open a checking account, “no questions asked,” Gonzalez said.
United Way’s partner banks in Grayson County are The Cecilian Bank and Fort Knox Federal Credit Union.
