The Grayson County Alliance’s Furniture Program is kicking off a “Christmas in July” promotion to, hopefully, boost donations of working appliances.
Like the snow of Christmas, volunteers are hoping to see a ‘flurry’ of white in the form of appliances. However, “we will take any color,” an Alliance volunteer said.
Through the summer months, as people remodel and upgrade their homes, program volunteers hope that the community will utilize it as an opportunity to aid those in need.
Items most needed are stoves and refrigerators, but the program also takes donations of other appliances, such as washers and dryers, and essential household furniture - tables and chairs, couches, beds, and dressers.
Grayson County “is a very generous community,” Melissa Williams, former director of the Furniture Program said. “[This program is] the people of Grayson County helping the people of Grayson County.”
Williams, along with other Alliance volunteers, emphasized their gratitude to all who have donated in the past or choose to donate in the future.
The Grayson County Alliance is a county-based program operating almost solely through volunteers. Last year the Furniture Program provided 251 working appliances for 91 households, which included 94 children. The Alliance also operates a food pantry and the annual Repair Affair, during which volunteers aid county residents in home repairs.
All donations to the Grayson County Alliance are tax-deductible and may be delivered to the program’s warehouse by appointment only. Weekly pick-ups are also available with the assistance of the Grayson County Jailer.
