American Legion Post 81 hosted its annual Flag Day Ceremony on Saturday, June 14.

Post 81 Commander Shane Thomason led the ceremony, during which old and/or tattered American, Kentucky State, and, for the first time, Prisoners of War/Missing in Action (POW/MIA) flags were retired.

Prior to the start of the ceremony, Thomason recognized two veterans who passed away in the past year, Rex Saltsman and Ted Strickland.

Then Thomason inspected the flags, presented by the Sergeant at Arms, and determined them fit to be retired.

After their inspection, the more than 1,000 flags were burned before a crowd of veterans, Legion members, and boy scout and cub scout troops.

Thomason said he hopes to have more participation next year and reminded citizens that old and/or tattered flags may be turned in to the Legion at any time throughout the year to be retired on Flag Day, which is held every year on June 14.

American Legion Post 81 is located at 415 Lee Avenue in Leitchfield and may be reached by phone at 270-259-6293.
