Leitchfield Officials once again toured Leitchfield Aquatic Center on Tuesday, May 27.

The water park is currently on schedule for a July 1 grand opening, and City Officials took advantage of the morning sunshine to observe the project’s current progress.

Since the first Aquatic Center tour, the facility’s water slide and play structure have been installed, features of the water park have become more defined, and all concrete has been poured.

Leitchfield Tourism Commission Treasurer Joyce Mudd said she’s excited for the center’s opening and intends to spend a lot of time there with her grandchildren during the summer.

“I think it’s wonderful for Leitchfield,” Mudd said. “It’s hard to believe there’s something like this in Leitchfield.”

Tourism Commissioner Lindell Sharp said the aquatic center is “beautiful…I think the community will embrace it.”

Tourism Commission Vice-Chair Randy Pauley said that while he has long been a proponent of an indoor pool and would still like to see one in Leitchfield for senior citizens, “I’m a lot more pleased [with Leitchfield Aquatic Center] than I thought I’d be. It’s a lot nicer than I anticipated.”

Prior to the officials’ tour of Leitchfield Aquatic Center, the Tourism Commission convened for its regularly scheduled monthly meeting.

Tommy Gumm, founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Alliance Corporation of Builders and Managers, said during the meeting that all the concrete for the park has been poured, and Alliance workers will start coating the pool deck this week.

The coating will have a 24-hour cure time, after which the pool will be filled and tested. The architects of the aquatic center will visit next week to check on the work, as well, Gumm said.

Leitchfield Tourism Director Ilsa Johnson said the City is looking to hold a soft opening on June 15 for City employees to receive maintenance training, and aquatic center employees to become acquainted with the facility.

Kevin Collard, of Pine View Nursery, addressed the Tourism Commission to report that landscaping work will soon commence, and he’s confident Pine View can, with its new plan, bring Tourism’s requests to fruition.

Johnson said the landscaping costs are currently below $20,000, so the work doesn’t have to be bid and can be done by a local landscaping agency.

She also said security and internet are currently being installed in the aquatic center.

Gumm requested that the Tourism Commission approve a number of aquatic center-related items, including a negative $60,670.82 change order to adjust for winter working conditions; a negative $1,219.75 change order to reimburse the City for Alliance’s purchase of too much concrete; and reimbursement to Alliance in the cost of $10,873 for the additional six weeks Alliance employees worked on Leitchfield Aquatic Center.

All of Gumm’s requests were approved by the Leitchfield Tourism Commission.
