A fire destroyed a Leitchfield apartment building on the morning of Friday, April 4.

At approximately 4:51 a.m. on Friday, Grayson County E-911 Dispatch received a call reporting an apartment building on Hollow Drive was engulfed in flames.

Upon arrival at the scene, the Leitchfield Fire Department discovered the second floor of the two-story building was “fully involved,” and the blaze had broken through the roof, according to LFD Sergeant Kevin Pharis.

In addition, firefighters discovered the first floor of the building was partially involved, said Pharis.

Firefighters battled the blaze until shortly after 8 a.m. and cleared the scene at approximately 8:08 a.m., according to GC Dispatch.

No one was injured as a result of the blaze, but one female Leitchfield firefighter suffered dizziness at the scene and was taken to Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center as a precaution, Pharis said.

The building, owned by Mark Cook, was unoccupied and undergoing renovations prior to the fire. It will likely be a total loss, said Pharis.

Because there were no witnesses to the fire, the LFD contacted the Kentucky State Police arson investigator to determine the exact cause of the blaze.

According to Pharis, the LFD typically calls in the arson investigator in circumstances such as Friday’s blaze when there is a large, commercial fire.

Pharis said on Friday morning that the arson investigator was expected to arrive in Leitchfield either later that day or by Monday, April 7.
