Two individuals have been charged in connection with acts of vandalism committed at B.G. Dewitt Park in Leitchfield on Saturday, March 15.

According to Detective Kevin Smith, of the Leitchfield Police Department, sometime on Saturday evening, subjects entered Dewitt Park, located at 315 West Walnut Street, and caused in excess of $1,000 in damage by painting on the park building and playground equipment.

The perpetrators reportedly painted various symbols, graphic language, inappropriate images, and gang references, one of the latter of which signified “up with Crips, down with Bloods,” according to Leitchfield Chief of Police Kevin Henderson, who spoke during the Monday, March 17 Leitchfield City Council meeting on the issue.

Police also discovered defaced yard signs, road signs, and equipment owned by P & L Railroad, Smith said.

“There’s a lot of this going around town right now,” Henderson said. “I just hate it that they’re doing this to City property and private property.”

Gaylen Logan, 18, of Leitchfield, and Dalton Elliot, 19, of Clarkson, were arrested and charged with Criminal Mischief 1st Degree on Tuesday, March 18.

Logan and Elliot were arrested without incident and transported to the Grayson County Detention Center. Both have since made bond and been released.

Henderson said despite some of the painted symbols’ being references to gangs, he thought it unlikely that the perpetrators are actually affiliated with a gang; rather, he believed they probably saw the references on television.

Occasionally, gang members from Radcliff and Elizabethtown make their way to Leitchfield when visiting local residents, but Leitchfield typically doesn’t have issues with gangs, Henderson said.

Criminal Mischief 1st Degree is a Class D Felony, according to the Kentucky Revised Statutes.
