Terry Blanton, 50-year-old former Grayson County Sheriff’s Department Detective, was placed into the custody of the Larue County Detention Center as a state inmate early last week.

Blanton was sentenced to one year in prison on Tuesday, Oct. 15 for theft of a controlled substance (a class D felony) and hindering prosecution or apprehension in the second degree (a class A misdemeanor).

Judge Bruce Butler signed the order into effect, which stated that imprisonment was a necessary punishment for Blanton due to a “substantial risk that the defendant will commit a crime during a period of probation.”

The order went on to explain that Blanton is “in need of correctional treatment,” and that “any other deposition [would] unduly depreciate the seriousness of the defendant’s crime.”

Blanton originally pleaded guilty to these charges and another charge of illegal trafficking in narcotics late last year; however, at a hearing last month, he pleaded guilty to the charges of theft and hindering prosecution.

Court documents read: “Between September 15, 2011 and March 31, 2012, [Blanton] unlawfully took controlled substances belonging to the Commonwealth thereof; and on April 24, 2012, the Defendant, with the intent to hinder the apprehension of another, Hope Shelbourne, who was being sought in connection with a criminal offense, he rendered assistance to Hope Shelbourne.”

Blanton spent more than two decades in law enforcement and served with the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office for eight years before resigning on March 14, 2012 amid criminal allegations.

Shortly after his resignation, Blanton was arrested by Kentucky State Police and was briefly lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center before being released on a $500 unsecured bail bond with the condition that he have no contact with law enforcement unless for official business.

KSP continued the investigation into Blanton’s behavior, turning the case over to their Drug Enforcement/Special Investigations West branch.

The charges against Blanton soon expanded to include theft of a controlled substance and trafficking in a controlled substance (hydrocodone) in the second degree, first offense.
