An overturned tractor-trailer at the Bel Cheese factory on West Main Street clogged traffic during the early morning hours of Tuesday, Oct. 15.

According to Detective Kevin Smith with the Leitchfield Police Department, the 2009 Mack truck driven by James Wathan, Sr. of Fond Du Lac, Wis. was traveling west when the operator attempted to make a right turn into the entrance of Bel Cheese.

“The right rear corner of the trailer dropped off the pavement causing the trailer of the vehicle to overturn,” Smith explained in a press release later that day.

The incident occurred at just after 4 a.m. and the roadway was shut down approximately an hour later “in order for crews to conduct clean-up operations and remove the vehicle.”

Traffic was blocked for more than an hour while first responders worked to clean up the area.

The tractor-trailer, which is registered to Tom Ottery Transit Inc. of Fond Du Lac, Wis., was carrying a load of milk, which in large amounts is considered a ‘hazardous material.’

A seperate incident on Thursday morning froze traffic along Hwy 62 when two vehicles collided near the area known as “Rock Crusher Hill.” The accident occurred at approximately 7:45 a.m.

No serious injuries were reported in connection with either incident.
