by Matt Lasley Reporter
UPDATED: The local U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, whose members operate the federal government-owned facilities of Nolin River Lake and Rough River Lake, has been forced to lay off a number of workers and close several park features as a result of the Tuesday, October 1 federal government shutdown.
Ruth Smith, Office Administrator for Nolin River Lake, said all Nolin River Lake Park Rangers, one maintenance worker, and one office clerk have been sent home as a result of the federal government shutdown.
In addition, all Nolin River Lake boat ramps have been closed except for those at Moutardier and Wax.
The Moutardier campground closed on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 4:30 p.m. and will remain closed for the duration of the federal government shutdown.
If the shutdown is still in effect on Tuesday, Oct. 15, the campground will close for the season and re-open in 2014, Smith said.
All Corps of Engineers Nolin park reservations past Sunday, Oct. 6 have been cancelled, as well, Smith said.
“[The shutdown] has affected a lot of families who were planning to come out to the lake for fall break,” Smith said.
Also affected by the federal government’s shutdown is Rough River Lake State Park.
According to the official Rough River Lake Facebook page, the Corps of Engineers office at Rough River is currently working on a reduced staff, as well.
Dianne Stratton, of the Corps of Engineers, said, currently, all four Corps of Engineers/federal government-operated campgrounds of Rough River Lake are closed.
The four Corps of Engineers-operated campgrounds are Laurel Branch, Cave Creek, North Fork, and Axtel, Stratton said.
All Corps of Engineers-operated boat ramps are currently open.
If the federal government shutdown continues past Oct. 15, all Corps of Engineers-operated Rough River campgrounds will close for the season, and any reservation that goes unused as a result of the shutdown will be refunded, according to Rough River’s Facebook page.
As of Wednesday, Oct. 2, all appointments for boat docks, cart paths, vegetation alteration permits, and other services have been cancelled, and no new appointments for any shoreline facilities are being made, according to the Rough River Lake Facebook page.
Stratton said all state park facilities at both Nolin and Rough River, including the state park campground, boat ramp, and lodge, are still open.
