The Leitchfield Walmart donated $1,000 in gift cards to Clarkson Elementary School teachers on Wednesday, September 25 as part of the company’s effort to give back to local and national education.
Per Walmart’s Teacher Rewards program, 20 Clarkson Elementary School teachers were randomly selected to receive $50 gift cards to be used to purchase essential classroom supplies for the new school year.
Walmart Personnel Coordinator Patsy Lindsey said the program is to “acknowledge teachers at Clarkson and across the country who reach into their own pocket to help students and their classroom.”
Clarkson Elementary Principal Kerry Reeves said, “I’m really glad for the staff. They really do spend a lot of their own money each year. It’s nice for Walmart to give back for education.”
The 20 Clarkson Elementary teachers who received gift cards on Wednesday include, in alphabetical order, Angie Abner, Tami Akridge, Tracy Bryant, Shannon Cates, Kelly Clemons, Kristen Cook, Kim Dennison, Angela Elmore, Joyce Elmore, James Gwilliam, Tonya Hill, Jennifer Hodges, Teresa Langley, Lora Lashley, Amanda Mattingly, Tammy Schultz, Kelly Skaggs, Trensia Skaggs, Meranda Vincent, and Christie Willis.
2013 marks the fifth year Walmart has participated in this event, and nationwide, the company is expected to donate up to $4.5 million in gift cards to 90,000 teachers, Lindsey said.
For the annual program, 4,600 United States Walmart stores, distribution centers, and Sam’s Club locations are eligible to select one local public school, grades K-8 and award twenty of its teachers gift cards, according to Lindsey.
