An early morning wreck on Shrewsbury Road injured one local man and briefly delayed traffic approximately 6.5 miles south of the city of Leitchfield on Saturday.

At just after 5 a.m. on May 17, 27-year-old Richard Newton of Sharer Drive fell asleep at the wheel of his 2002 Pontiac Grand Am, according to an accident report filed by Deputy Jarrod Mudd with the Grayson County Sheriff’s Department.

The vehicle, which was travelling southbound along KY 187, struck a mailbox, causing damage to personal property before striking a ditch and an embankment.

The impact caused the vehicle to then overturn, coming to a final rest on its roof.

According to the report, Newton was able to stand on his own when first responders arrived, despite suffering head and back injuries.

Newton was treated at the scene by Grayson County EMS before being transported by ambulance to Twin Lakes Regional Center for further treatment of his injuries.
