Locally-based nonprofit Tri-County CASA was announced as the top vote-getting agency in the recent contest hosted by The Grayson County News-Gazette, it’s parent company Civitas Media, and the newly-launched MyOwnLeitchfield.com.

CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is a volunteer-based organization focused on mediating for children in child abuse and neglect cases within the court system.

The carefully-screened and well-trained volunteers give voice to children “who would otherwise have no voice,” according to the group’s website, www.casanetworkky.com.

The organization rallied support and drew an impressive 637 online votes during the second round of our recent contest, and received as their prize $2,700 worth of free advertising in print and online from The Grayson County News-Gazette to use as they wish to further their message.

As an added bonus, Gazette General Manager Theresa Armstrong announced at the awards ceremony on Monday morning that the paper’s parent company, Civitas Media, would be “matching” that amount by giving an extra $2,700 worth of advertising.

The competition’s first runner-up, Grayson County Humane Society, came in just behind CASA with 417 second-round votes, and will be given the top spot on the cover of the Gazette’s upcoming annual community directory.

Each of the top five vote-getting nonprofits will be featured in the directory this year as well. In addition to Tri-County CASA and The Grayson County Humane Society, the following groups will be featured: Western Kentucky Car Club, Master Gardeners Association of Grayson County, and the Better Business Bureau.
