Sub-zero temperatures were not enough to stop members of Friends of Rough River Lake (FRRL) from working to clean up the Little Clifty Creek area of Rough River Lake last week.
Despite temperatures that ranged from the single digits into the teens throughout the day, the group cleared out around 200 pounds of trash, with aluminum cans making up the bulk of the litter.
FRRL President Howard Tomes said, “Cans and bottles make up for a dangerous situation, especially when they are on the bottom of the lake close to shore. Some people throw their cans or bottles into the lake and then a boat comes along runs over the can or bottle, and it sinks. Sometimes the edges of the cans or bottles are razor-sharp from being hit by a boat prop. Someone swimming close to the shore ends up stepping on one and then you have a person with a laceration that requires medical treatment all because someone littered.”
Tomes added that both the City of Leitchfield and Grayson County get the majority of their drinking water from the lake, which is a good reason to work to keep the lake as clean as possible.
“Please help keep it clean,” Tomes said.
