The Grayson County Ministerial Association has been awarded a $5,000 grant from United Way to support their community efforts.
United Way representative Rachel Watkins, a VISTA program volunteer working in marketing and communications, presented a check to Ministerial Association president Johnnie Long on Tuesday morning at the group’s regular meeting.
Watkins said of her organization, “United Way’s mission is to provide the community with education, financial stability and good health. We look for partners in the community like the Ministerial Association who share those goals.”
She went on to say that one in four area children live in poverty - many of those children benefit annually from the Ministerial Association’s donations of school supplies to local Family Resource Centers.
The United Way funds will go toward assisting families and individuals in need with their utility bills, Long explained. The funds will be administered through the local Community Action office.
Long also said that this grant will help the organization free up some of their other funds for their annual school supply donation to area Family Resource centers as well as other projects throughout the year.
