A tropical-themed Jacksonville restaurant is taking its South Seas flavor to South Diamond Street.

The Luau Grill Island BBQ, which had been at 1108 W. Morton Ave. since 2010, will reopen early this summer in the Diamond Plaza building at 803 S. Diamond St., the former home of Midland Farm & Home Supply.

“We lost our lease on West Morton because the property was sold a few months ago,” said Roger Davis, owner and operator of The Luau Grill Island BBQ. “The owners of Diamond Plaza heard about my situation and offered to lease me a space in their building.”

In that space, Davis plans to build a 2,880-square-foot restaurant. The new Luau Grill, which will be in the northeast corner of the building, will feature a full kitchen, an expanded menu that will include fresh seafood and a kids’ menu, as well as seating for about 60 people.

“We will be serving counter-style barbecue, which is where meats are cut to order and served on butcher paper,” Davis said. “That is something that is unique to this area but is commonly found in the South.”

Since closing the West Morton Avenue location in early January, Davis has continued The Luau Grill catering service and worked on plans for the new restaurant.

“Until we open, which I hope is in June, I will be grilling outside Diamond Plaza on Fridays and Saturdays, weather permitting,” he said.
