A standoff between an armed man and law enforcement officers on Sunday evening ended in one arrest.

Grayson County Sheriff Rick Clemons, along with Deputies Buck Meredith and Adam Cottrell responded to a domestic dispute call in which the caller indicated that a man had a firearm and was acting erratically.

Once on scene, the officers found that the man, 43-year-old Grayson County resident James Johnson, had left his property and crossed the street. Johnson was found in the driveway of an abandoned residence, according to the arrest report.

According to Clemons, Johnson had a semi-automatic firearm in his possession and had discharged the firearm prior to the officers’ arrival. He added that while the weapon had been shot, it had not been toward any person.

“An officer has to be on alert at all times, but especially in a situation like this, we are thinking, ‘Where can we position ourselves for safety and effectiveness? What tools will we use to de-escalate this situation?’”

“We were kept off at edge for some time,” Clemons said, explaining that the officers were eventually able to convince Johnson to put the gun down.

At that point, Johnson was arrested. Cottrell wrote in the arrest report that Johnson had “an odor of alcoholic beverage on his person” and that he admitted to having been drinking whiskey.

Johnson was charged with public intoxication, first offense, and was briefly lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center before being released on bond.

“When there is a possible domestic dispute, alcohol can often be involved,” Clemons said, “and it’s a very bad situation when weapons become involved as well.”

Clemons said that the Sheriff’s Office staff undergo special training in how to handle such volatile situations.
