A small fire broke out in the Grayson County Middle School (GCMS) locker room on Thursday afternoon, June 16, prompting the Leitchfield Fire Department (LFD) to respond to the scene.
The LFD received the call at around 12:08 p.m. on Thursday, and responded to the rear entrance to the GCMS gym.
LFD Captain Roy Hack said on the scene that a small fire had ignited in the gym’s locker room; however, it had been primarily extinguished before firefighters arrived.
The fire did, however, fill the locker room with smoke, so firefighters were called to assist with clearing the smoke out of the locker room and prevent it from spreading into the gym, according to Hack.
“It was more than they could handle, so they called us,” said Hack.
Damages were few, and the fire was contained to a small area in the locker room.
Leitchfield Fire Chief Tim Duvall said the fire started as a result of construction workers’ using a cutting torch in the area in which the blaze ignited.
