Tourism approves disc golf designer

By Matt Lasley -

The Leitchfield Tourism Commission voted this week to have Grayson County native Everett Lasley design a local disc golf course.

The Tourism Commission reviewed Lasley’s quote for the design and construction of the Leitchfield disc golf course during its regular Tuesday, Feb. 23 meeting.

Per the quote, Lasley will design the course for free and is asking for only fuel reimbursement for travel to and from Leitchfield.

According to Tourism Commissioner Jose Soto, Lasley recommends initially constructing a nine-hole disc golf course in the James D. Beville Park and, later, adding an additional nine holes—after construction on the American Legion Post 81 Veterans Memorial Park is completed—for a total of 18 holes.

“I’m excited about it,” said Tourism Commission Chair Ryan Bratcher of the course. “I think it will be a good thing.”

Currently, the Tourism Commisson’s only financial commitment to the project is mileage reimbursement, and it will make a decision on whether to construct the course after Lasley presents his design.

Leitchfield Tourism Director Ilsa Johnson said she will also present the work that has been done on the disc golf course project to the Leitchfield City Council at its next meeting to request approval to move forward with the project.

In other business:

*Johnson said a committee has been formed to discuss marketing strategies to make the City of Leitchfield more attractive to new restaurants.

*Johnson said Leitchfield Aquatic Center’s 2016 season will begin Memorial Day weekend, along with the opening of American Legion Post 81 Veterans Memorial Park and the annual Memorial Day festivities.

LAC will accept applications for employment through March and April for the 2016 season.

*Johnson said LAC’s second slide is in, built, and came in under budget. The Tourism Commission originally budgeted $175,000 for the slide, which ultimately cost $157,540.

*The Tourism Commission approved a $1,225 change order for LAC.

*Johnson said Leitchfield Tourism is currently accepting local grant applications through April.
